People in the 21st century have come to invest so much in keeping their family safe from all of the elements that can inflict their members harm. Security systems are installed in most houses, protective seats in cars are preferred, even fuel efficient cars are purchased for long term use by the family. Through all of these, what can you do to protect your family on the internet?

The internet can be a fun and interesting place to be in if you’re careful. Although it’s uncomfortable to talk about, most parents know about the predators that lurk on the internet. Then you factor in all the sites that you wouldn’t want your young child to be seeing and you have a huge worry on your mind. There are a few things you can do to monitor where your child goes and what they do.

Prevention is always better than the cure as the old adage goes, so it is best that your take preventive measures. The first thing to do is to download some protection software. This is not the antivirus software or a firewall – though helpful, they are used for a different purpose. This is software that keeps track of the websites certificate to check if it contains mature content.

This works similarly to the V-chip systems in TV’s. It checks the certificate of the website for the type of content, and if the content is in your blacklist it blocks it. This ensures that your kids don’t go somewhere they shouldn’t when you’re not home. Of course it’s not perfect, sometimes content can get through, so having a popup and spam blocker can also help.

This is where monitoring software comes in to play. Computer monitoring software runs in the background and monitors all chat logs, typed webpage’s, and content loaded. It’s completely silent and in most cases unnoticeable, but provides you a complete record of what’s been done on the machine. Several companies use this type of software to monitor their employee’s computers.

There is nothing important in life than the safety of your children; you should in all of your powers keep them from whatever harm that might attack them unknowingly. But there comes a time when your child notices that you are just being overprotective of them and will ask the reason why. Should this happen, explain why you are doing this.

They may not be old enough to understand the complex reasons, but you need to explain it to them in a simple way. If you don’t explain it to them then they are going to get mad, and frustrated. This won’t have a major affect on you, but they will try to find ways to get around your protection. So if they ask what’s going on, please explain to them that the internet isn’t always a safe place.

Once they know that there are dangers online, they will stop trying to get around your protection software. You must impose the same rules for interacting with people in real life and the in cyberspace. Don’t talk to strangers, and if something comes up, get your mother or father. The idea seems to be too much but it is necessary in the protection of those that we love.
