The Best Gas Mileage Cars Do Not Include Jeeps

23rd Dec, 2009 | No Comment | Posted in traveling

Having a Jeep is like being in a club. Did you ever see that when Jeep drivers see other Jeep drivers on the road they give them a honk and a wave? Well, it happens, sometimes. Okay, it used to happen more, but it doesn’t matter.

Jeeps were first introduced for US military use during Word War II. They were incredibly useful for the soldiers and many of them want that type of vehicle when they return from the war. The fact that they are 4×4 and look cool makes them popular to this day. Here are the different models they currently have for 2010:

The 2010 Jeep Commander

You have two different engine options for 2010: the 6 cylinder gets 15/20 and the eight cylinder is rated at 13/19 and that includes a system that shuts down 4 cylinders when it can to get you better fuel efficiency.

The 2010 Jeep Compass

5 speed Manual Transmission rates 23 city and 28 on the freeway 5 speed AT gets 21/25

2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee

If you want the big, powerful HEMI Grand Cherokee, you will have a V8 that is going to get you a 11/16 rating. There is a V8 that has MDS or the Multi-Dispalcement System that shuts down cylinders when you do not actually need them. This model will get you a little bit better 13/19 rating. The V6 gets a respectable 16/21.

Chrysler’s 2010 Jeep Liberty

16 miles in the city and 22 on the highway is what the EPA is rating Chrysler’s Jeep Liberty at for 2010.

2010 Jeep Patriot

3 engine modes: 5 speed manual gets 23/28; Automatic comes in at 21/25 and the smaller 2L engine gets 23/27.

The 2010 Chrysler Jeep Wrangler

V6 5 speed MT 15/19 V6 5 speed AT 15/19

Chrysler’s 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

V6 automatic and manual both rate 15/20.

I want better gas mileage from my Jeep. Any tips?

a) Drive in 2 wheel drive as much as possible. Driving in 4 wheel drive when you don’t have too will kill your mileage rating.

b) A 4cylinder is going to get better fuel economy than a V6 and both will do better than a V8. Unless you need the power for towing or something like that, stick with the smaller engine if you are worried about fuel economy.

c) Your air conditioning can absolutely kill your gas mileage. You may not like it, but roll down the windows if you can. Your pocket book will thank you.

I like my Jeep, but I am definitely getting tired of the gas mileage I get. I might have to go with a sedan or hybrid for my next vehicle.
