Are You a Candidate for an Athletic Scholarship?

Students in 2009 (and their families) can expect to pay about $80,000 for a four-year college program. What’s more, that figure continues to rise at the rate of 6.5% every year. If you are considering a private school, go ahead and double it. If, however you’ve been a good sport – literally – throughout high school, chances are you can look beyond standard student loans, financial aid and grants for assistance. Why not apply for an athletic scholarship? About $1.2 billion in scholarship money is awarded to students every year in exchange for their performance on various fields. Here are a few of the basics for you to kick around:

1. There’s an age cut-off. If you’re past 24 years-old you’ve missed the opportunity to earn a scholarship in exchange for playing sports. The range is from age’ to 24, so it makes sense for you to go straight to college after high school.

2. The NCAA (National College Athletic Association) recognizes 29 sports; therefore scholarships are available for them depending on the campus. Men’s sports include: Soccer, Baseball, Water Polo, Fencing, Volleyball, Cross Country, Track & Field (Indoor & Outdoor), Rifle, Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Golf, Football, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Tennis, Skiing (Cross Country and Downhill), Lacrosse and Wrestling.

College Scholarships Help Countless Students

Getting money to pay for university is a big challenge and receiving a school scholarship may be a immense help for many students. If the learner qualifies, there are countless university-funded scholarship programs available. Although there are countless packages available for the eligible application he or she may not end up receiving any money for college

Essentially, there are three basic types of university scholarships available to eligible students. The three dissimilar types of scholarship are academic, which are administered through the university, athletic, which are also through the university, and affiliate which are administered through private organizations. Athletic scholarships are used by universities to attract athletes and build athletic packages. For students that are qualified to take advantage of athletic scholarships, these packages can be a great way to earn an education affordably. What is not widely known is that many universities have scholarship programs for the individual and less well known sports. In addition to the primary team sports, it is not uncommon for a university athletics program to have scholarships available for students that play golf, badminton, and occasionally even table tennis.

Key Steps To Get A Golf Scholarship

Junior golf continues to grow in large part thanks to Tiger Woods. As more and more student-athletes join Junior golf, there is an obvious increase in competition for college golf scholarships. Because of this fact, I thought it would be important to share with you some of the common parameters a college golf coach is looking for in new recruits.

Please, understand that what I am sharing with you are only parameters. They are not set in stone, and I think it is valuable to have something to shoot for as you continue to develop your golf game.

I know intangibles are an important part of a college coaches recruiting process. I speak from experience. I am a 6′ guy that played quarterback in the Pac-10. Typically, coaches want their quarterbacks in the Pac-10 to be at least 6′2″.

I hope this gives you HOPE even if your scores do not currently match up to what college coaches are looking for in their prospective golfers.

Keep in mind, that the BASICS of college recruiting still apply…even if you are within the given guidelines. It is important that you still excel in the class room, and YES, coaches want to see video your swings. Once you get some video done of your swings, begin to promote yourself to college coaches all over the country.
