Minimize Energy Uses With Your Computer

In this tech world, computer has become a basic need. But many necessary tasks like downloading heavy software or a movie require you to leave the computer running overnight or for long periods especially if your downloading speed is less. In such cases, you would like to cut computer energy usage. What can you do for that? Here are some tips for the same.

When you don’t need the display like if you are listening to songs or some downloading is going on then at that time you should switch off your monitor as it is not required. While your monitor is in use, don’t set brightness too high as it will consume more electricity and also use some dark wallpapers for your screen. It will also save some bits of electricity.

In case you have a LCD display then energy consumption of display is not affected by the colors of display. Whether LCD has a black or white background it will use the same amount of electricity.

When you have to leave your system for quite a long time then you can change the computer’s setting by going into control panel. There is an option in control panel for power settings. In case you don’t have much need of CPU like for applications in which you need network connection more than CPU, you can set the CPU to minimum level. Don’t ever turn off the hard disk as it is always required.

An animated background always uses more CPU cycles and hence more electricity. Never use animated wallpaper for your system if you actually want to save some units in your bill. Using an animated screen saver is also not preferred as animation requires more CPU work. You should use either a simple screen saver or a blank screen saver.

When you leave your system, check that you have closed all the unused applications like your mail box, word processors, spreadsheets and any other such application. By doing this, you will be able to make little difference but little is better than nothing.

Extra peripherals (speakers, woofers, web cam, printer and scanner) that are not required in the particular application should be unplugged. They can eat up some electricity even if they are tuned off. Hence, you need to be cautious.

You can measure your computer energy usage with an electricity usage meter such as a Kill-a-watt meter. You can plug this meter into the wall and then plug your computer power bar into that. This will use a small investment in starting and can be used all over the house and will help you in saving.
