How to Optimize Your Computer

16th Dec, 2009 | No Comment | Posted in computer & internet

On the topic of Computer Optimization there is a lot of information out there. There are always adds encouraging you to improve your computer and make it’s perform more efficient. So what is the truth about this? Does your computer really need it?

Yes! Windows operating system has many weak areas that most people don’t know about. Some of these include:

-Registry

-Hardware management

-Internet connection

Windows internal database is the registry. It has from drivers and hardware info. to application settings. Programs can leave behind pieces of information after removing hardware devices such as a video card. On removal, most people don’t think about it, but the applications don’t uninstall completely. There is “regedit” that you can run but you will have to manually go in and remove all the information pertaining to what you removed and then you have to remove it. This can be quite dangerous! I recommend you use a software program instead.

When I say hardware management I am talking about memory and hard-disk management. Each program uses some part of your computer’s memory. Memory allocation is determined by how much room a program will take and what resource is available. Once the application stops, that used portion of memory should be available. However this doesn’t always happen. So when a new program requests the memory it needs to run, it will slow down your computer since it has to compete with the other sources for the remaining resources.

If you remove files from your computer this will happen too. They don’t actually get erased. They remain on your hard-disk and affect the files you want to read or write. One way to help with this is by cleaning the hard-disk of the remaining information by defragmenting once a month.

There are many people today that use the internet. As a result, internet speed has become a big issue. By speed I mean how long it will take for your computer to download. Does it take you long to browse the internet? By default when you browse a site your computer will use the site’s server to make a channel in order to download it. Your internet subscription will determine the speed but there are other factors. Connection channels are both single and multi threaded. The channel should be single threaded by default. Breaking down the download file into smaller parts your computer will create a download channel for each. It will rebuild the source once it is downloaded. Download accelerators accomplish this.

Is computer optimization so important? No question, yes! You have many options free of charge. But registry errors are the one thing I would not try to fix on my own. You can buy an inexpensive program that is very worth your time and money to fix the errors.
