Discovering The Essentials of a Good Night’s Sleep
Anyone who has trouble falling asleep, and staying asleep, knows how frustrating it can be. Not to mention how the lack of sleep leaves you dragging the next day. But did you know there are a few common sense things you can do to attain and maintain a healthy sleep routine? Let’s see what they are.
Keep your biological clock in tune. That means go to bed and get up the same time all the time. Weekends included. Sleeping in may sound appealing on a Sunday morning. But even then do your best to get up within an hour of your weekday wake up time.
Plan wind down time. Avoid things like exercising, drinking either coffee or alcohol or going out for a smoke too close to bedtime. Sure, I agree that working out is good for you. And if done earlier can actually help you get to sleep. But done later in the evening it can leave you wide awake and counting sheep.
Eat not for a couple hours before bedtime. Stoking your body with energy producing food and then expecting to fall asleep at the appointed time is crazy. Which is why eating dinner late is out. Unless it’s just a snack like a piece of fruit or something light to kill your hunger.
No pills please. Over the counter sleep cures are not your best move either. If you need a little something to help you get to sleep you should see your physician. There may be something physically at issue if these tips don’t help you regularize your sleep routine.
Avoid daytime napping. If you absolutely need to nap make it short. You know, the so called power nap? Reason being long naps tend to come back to affect your sleep routine later on that night.
Set the scene for sleep. Dark. Quiet. Cool temps (60-68 degrees F) with plenty of warm cozy blankets to snuggle up under. And get a bed for Fido if need be. There’s no advantage to sharing your bed with a large pet.
With such stress filled lives it should come as no surprise we sometimes find ourselves counting sheep instead of sleeping. But fortunately many can find relief by following the simple bits of advice just shared. And by doing so recharge your batteries and wake up feeling refreshed and alert. Ready for whatever the day has in store for you.
