5 Reasons to Visit Tasmania, Australia
Tasmania is often the forgotten state of Australia and is sometimes overlooked by travelers. This seems to be because of its position. It is an island off the mainland just below Melbourne. Getting here is however much easier than you think with affordable flights from most major cities, particularly Melbourne and Sydney.
If you fancy taking it easy for a while and enjoying a much slower pace of life then Tasmania really is for you. There is something quite serene and peaceful about Tasmania, even in the major cities of Launceston and Hobart. It’s generally very quiet which gives a sense of real discovery. As if it’s only you there appreciating all it has to offer.
Why Visit Tasmania?
The Scenery
I don’t think there is anywhere else in Australia that offers such different rugged and mountainous landscapes. Around every corner is a stunning view. From rainforests to mountains to beautiful coastlines, there really is scenery to that everyone will love. For those of you who have visited Scotland in the UK, it feels very similar. Wherever you explore the windy roads will take you through beautiful scenery. A trip to Cradle Mountain is definitely recommended.

The Beaches
Whilst Tasmania is often known as the coldest of the Australian states, come in summer and you will be pleasantly surprised at their beaches. The Bay of Fires has been awarded plenty of “Best Beach” awards competing against the entire coastline of Australia. Wine Glass Bay is another amazing spectacle not to be missed.
The Food and Wine
It is its location and climate that makes Tasmania a destination for its wine. It also has some great cheeses. From a wine perspective, it has some of the best cool wine regions in Australia. It’s Pinot Noir and sparkling wines are world famous. A trip to the Tamar Valley just outside Launceston is a total treat. The wineries are all easily accessible and are not too spread out making it an easy day trip. Stay a while and enjoy a lazy lunch and some excellent wine.
The Walking
Tasmania is certainly the place for you if you like outdoor holidays and walking. There are lots of wonderful walking trails to suit all levels. Have yo heard of the Overland Track? It is probably Tasmania’s most famous track attracting thousands of international walkers every year. It goes from Cradle Mountain to Mount St Clair and is a 6 day hike across stunning scenery and wilderness. There are campsites along the way or you can stay in huts.
The History
Some of the first settlements were in Tasmania with many of the convicts from the UK being put to work in Tasmania. As a result there are plenty of places of interest where you can glean more information. Port Arthur, just outside Hobart, is a fascinating place which is believed to be haunted. This place is most worthy of a visit, particularly at night if your nerves can take it.
